It’s In The Blood
November 5, 2011 has now been added to the list of days that involved a very monumental occasion that will forever change me.
This date was the day of my first family reunion on my mother’s side, the Wilson and Davis family. My mother went on to be with the Lord on April 26, 2011 and though she was not there physically, I felt her presence and her spirit which lives on in her siblings and her extended family. I saw so much of my mom sprinkled in that fellowship hall of people who shared the same genetics. It is common knowledge that a person’s appearance – height, hair color, skin color, and eye color – are determined by genes and with my mom that would be her signature thick eyebrows, beautiful smile and not so physical genetics such as her sense of humor and determination!
My mom was so funny and so nurturing. She did what she could with what she had; she sacrificed for the sake of her children and her family; she was known for being the comedian of the family and everyone who came in contact with her, always made their way back because of her magnetic love for life! She loved the Lord and her relationship with the Lord grew over time but even more through her adversity with her health. I saw my mom change in a way that I have desired to see for a long time. She displayed to me traits of her mother and grandmother who where also strong women of faith and virtue.
Isn’t it amazing the genetic traits that are present in your family? You may have a cousin who has “freckles” and no one else in their immediate family does but when you see pictures or in person an elder in their family, like a grandmother or grandfather, you notice that genetic feature showing up in later generations within the family. It is “passed down” or “in the bloodline of the family”, some would say. But literally, our blood is an intricate part of our life and when tested, it can reveal information about you and your family. For example high blood pressure can signal hypertension and is known for being hereditary.
The blood flowing through our bodies is our life source and without blood flowing through our bodies, it’s impossible to have human life on earth. Just as Christians believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross shedding HIS blood as the only acceptable payment of our sins. This act of redemption made it possible for us to have LIFE and have it more abundantly which is HIS desire for us all. The disciple Peter wrote in 1 Peter 1:18-19, “For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. He paid for you with the precious lifeblood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.”
When you accept Jesus into your life, his spirit begins to purify us and purge out of us anything unlike HIM. It’s in the Blood of Jesus where HIS power is released into our lives and the atonement for our souls. What an honor and a privilege to be a part of God’s Family!
The body of Christ is a body of believers joined together, sharing the same bloodline: our belief in the crucifixion and the gift of salvation from our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. We not only believe in HIM but we also look like our Heavenly Father. The bible says that God made us in his image (Genesis 9:6). Put that in perspective for a moment…..Wow! What a work of art our God must be because every human being made are all so unique! No two are the same, so what does that say about “who” you are and “who” you belong to? Let me guess, a pretty amazing “bloodline” of family!
